CentOS is smudgeit's preferred operating system. CentOS is a community-supported, freely-available operating system based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. It exists to provide a free enterprise class computing platform and strives to maintain 100% binary compatibility with its upstream distribution.
Many other companies use OpenVz or Virtuozzo for their VPS systems. These systems take a different approach on sharing system resources.
OpenVZ uses OS level virtualization, while Xen uses paravirtualization. This means it's like having your own dedicated server when you purchase a VPS with smudgeit.
This also means that when you purchase 512mb or ram you are actually getting 512Mb of personal RAM. Not burstable shared RAM like the other systems mentioned.

How quickly can my server be set up?
Your Xen server will be up and running within 24 hours of processing your payment. For some operating systems, like centos, your server may be up & running within 30 mins of placing the order.
Can I upgrade RAM or disk space later?
Yes, of course. If your need more RAM or disk space, just let us know and we can upgrade you to a different plan. Upgrading is simple.
Is my server firewalled?
We do not block any ports but do recommend you set up your own firewall. Please use our support system if you need assistance.
Where are the servers located?
The servers are located in a new data centre just outside London. The facility has been built to the highest specification with the highest-class levels of reliability and redundancy, including HVAC temperature control, an online uninterruptible power system, and backup diesel generator in case of utility power failure. Security includes 24/7 cover by on-site staff, multiple internal and external video camera surveillance, controlled security card access and a gated secure compound.
Can I use Windows as my operating system?
No, we do not offer any plans based on the windows operating system.
